Leadership - Team of teams

July 22, 2015

Aspects of leadership planning you can apply in your career.   Grappling with clear corporate leadership in a connected age. I mentioned before that I listen to the Tim Ferriss podcast and much of this post is based on the recent episode with General Stanley McChrystal. It is a long form and wide ranging discussion that at certain points deals with McChrystal's recently published business book - Team of Teams. There are many parts to both the interview and the book but I am going to focus on one particular insight. I think strong leadership can actually implement this plan and reap the rewards. The goal is a large group of people, set up in different teams/ units, but, all operating as a network with independent decision making. This decision making is nonetheless completely aligned to the orgainsation main objectives. This is achieved in simple terms through better communication from the top. This is fairly standard stuff, but the interesting part is how this is over-layed with the wildly different external reality of dynamic and kinetic networks of competitors and consumers. I will get to that shortly, but first it is useful to provide a little background to the author of this idea and the long-standing relationship between military strategy and business planning.

Get your CV read by a human

July 11, 2015

In 2015 a lot of the placements I make are based on a one to one introduction with someone senior in a business looking for a key, hard to find hire. It is not a long drawn out process, rather an informal coffee that leads to a more thorough process. Once I have done my job right matching chemistry, cultural fit and competencies the coffee progresses to a formal process pretty quickly. This is the best way to recruit in my opinion; use a trusted partner, someone who knows his client's business to the extent he can hand pick people from his network that will fit. The result is usually a two plus year engagement followed by promotion or moving on. These introductions rarely, if ever, don't work out.

Functional areas we recruit for explained and typical job titles

July 3, 2015

Last week I wrote a piece on the intersection of technology and organisational transformation in this connected age. That post summarised the broad categories of digital experience and digital change. I am now going to explain what the associated functional areas do and the kind of job titles that are found in each area. The goal is to give you a deeper understanding of not only what kind of work we do but also what kind of skills companies now need to nurture and hire to accomplish their digital transformation.

Gaining momentum, one Chrome extension at a time

June 26, 2015

Quick post today as I am still not finished a rather long and detailed breakdown of all the jobs and skills we recruit for. That will be posted next week. For now, I thought I would share something really quick and useful. Since I have set up RattleBerry a big focus has been on productivity tools and tricks. It is a nerdy interest of mine and one I am happy to indulge you with good reader. Momentum I use momentum for Chrome. Every day it keeps me moving forward and a little more organised. I highly recommend if, like me, you find yourself drifting away from a task you really need to crack.
