A couple of days ago I was reading an article about how product development is transformed in a lot of companies through the incorporation of a design method that sets the customer as the priority. As stated in the article “instead of relying on people’s gut instincts, this new design framework cultivates empathy for users, emphasizes iteration and prototyping, and promotes tests throughout the process. It’s called design thinking, and more tech companies are adopting it”. With this in mind this week’s topic is Design Thinking. We felt that this is a topic that needs to be further explored as it is shaping the future of the tech industry, makes business sense, improves product development and enriches customer experience.

It is a thought provoking post particularly for someone who has a humanities background and a great interest in pursuing a career in product management. According to this article a successful product management "is an entrepreneur, strategist, technical visionary, cross-functional team leader, and customer advocate all rolled into one. They try to understand what it means to walk in the shoes of the customer — what their problems are, what their environments are like, what they read, who they talk to, who they listen to, what their worries are in life. And then they try to extrapolate those insights into personas they can use as an anchor for product design decisions". This article lead to this post. Agile and user centered design

Bringing user centred products and services to market is a preoccupation for all of our clients. In many ways user centred design is the new marketing. Your customers experience is your brand. But how are the large and unwieldy corporate sector addressing this new reality? The people we work with tend to be senior managers in large, complex, multi-layed corporations. With the greatest of respect these kinds of institutions are not know for agility or for rapid change and innovation. This is not always a bad thing, and, it is worth bearing in mind that the "turn an oil tanker" line, used to scold large businesses about their slowness to innovate, does not factor in that the tanker is full of oil!   With this in mind we asked Eleni in the office to trace the context of product and service design from Waterfall to Agile and how User Centred Design came to demand consideration in this evolution.
